About My Art
I didn't begin my art experiences with painting because I didn't feel confident enough for some time. However, I began to paint in my early thirties. I didn't really have a style at first, but over time I began painting pictures that blended earthtoned colors into intricate details. Sometimes I would add a touch of whimsy but I normally saved that style for sculpting. However, over the years I developed more of an abstract realism style with bright colors to reflect the many positive transformations I have experienced. I used to be a negative person, but as I worked to see life with a more joyful attitude, my color pallettes changed from dull to bright.
So my art relfects my life. Whether it's a serene landscape, a vibrant floral arrangement, or a powerful abstract piece, I spend time ensuring that each painting radiates a sense inspiration and upliftment.
And whenever I can, I love to include a bright sun or moon to express my passion for spreading joy through my paintings. I can honestly say that I paint to evoke a range of emotions from introspection to pure joy, leaving many of my viewers feeling refreshed and inspired.
My Art Experience
I don't believe that I was born an artist because I had to work harder at drawing than some of my classmates who were artists at young ages. However, I did work at it. When I was 9 years old I won a drawing contest by submitting a portrait of Jesus to our church newsletter that was read throughout the country.
I decided to make art and crafts an important part of my life after that. However I didn't paint as a child, I made crafts using many mediums, including designing doll clothes and sewing them. I sold my smallest crafts at school until I was told that selling on school grounds was prohibited. I took art in high school but I made collages. My art was always chosen to be displayed and I always won our class art contests. Yet, I didn't consider myself an artist.
Later, as an adult, my husband purchased a yarn store for me in my early thirties because I enjoyed knitting and crocheting at that time. However, it didn't do well until I started painting custom needlepoint canvases and making crochet and knitted puppets, and clothing and toys for children and babies. The only products I could sell were the products I made from my own designs. I decided at that point to let go of the store and work from home when I became pregnant with my son.
I already had a young daughter, so I set up my business to work from home and advertised through magazines. I did very well and I could be with my children. I was very happy with the arrangement. I went back to painting custom needlepoint canvases until large companies began printing custom designs, advertising through craft magazines.
I slowly shifted to sculpting miniature whimsical animal scenes with clay. I sold them at craft fairs throughout my state of California and Las Vegas. The shows helped me recognize which of my figures sold the best so that I could create instructions books for them and sell them through magazine ads. I was very successful, but I decided to stop and access my priorities. I felt as if I needed to move in a different direction with art, but I didn't know what that was. Something seemed to be missing from within.
Not long after that, I began to paint on canvas. I loved it but I had two small children and a baby, so I purchased art books and taught myself. I did custom work, but over time, I got involved helping with my husband's marketing for his business. That took a number of years.
When my husband retired, he began putting my easel, paints and canvases in the hall upstairs where I could see them everyday. I still didn't paint. We moved and he did the same in our spare bedroom. That made me think that he did that for a purpose. I was suppose to paint! So I've been painting ever since which takes me to current times. Now, I never stop painting! This is what I was meant to do.
As I've said, currently, I have refocused my art to an abstract realism style that is more vibrant and connected to the subtle messages I share in my art. My newest art category, "Gallery of Faith" is Influenced by my Christian teaching experience, using the transformative power of God to reflect in my paintings of faith as well as inspiration.
