Waiting For You

Waiting For His Love?

I like to paint birds in soft pastel chalk as well as with oil because it captures the soft and delicate look of bird feathers. "Thinking of You" was painted with my favorite, Sennelier Extra Soft Pastels.  It reminds me of the many birds I've seen that wait patiently alone on a tree branch or a fence for what seems like hours.

Sometimes another bird will appear, so I wonder if they're in love.  Or did they just meet?  I can never be sure, but it's something awesome to think about.  I did hear long ago that birds fall in love and remain loyal to each other for life.

The behavior of birds in love serves as a reminder of the power of connection and the beauty of nature. Their devotion to one another is a testament to the strength of love, a force that transcends time and space to create bonds that are as unbreakable as they are beautiful.

So the next time you see a pair of birds together who might be in love, take a moment to  appreciate the magic of avian love and the wonders of the natural world.

Things I Consider When Painting Birds On Canvas or Sanded Paper For Chalk:  My Guide to Capturing Feathered Friends With Chalk Pastels or Paint

Understanding Bird Anatomy

Basic bird anatomy is important, but when painting birds through the lens of abstract impressionism I don't  consider every detail. I don't want to capture a photograph of birds, that's what cameras are for.  Instead I create an artistic likeness that captures my vision.

Choosing the Right Palette

I spend at least a half hour gathering the right paint colors in transparent and opaque or chalk for a combination of colors that will create a story build on the symbolism, color and placement of the bird or birds within the painting.  Compliment colors are carefully used to highlight the main objects.

Mastering Feather Detail

My brush strokes aren't so detailed as to create perfect looking feathers, but instead to reveal the likeness of feathers. Sometimes too much detail takes away from the story of the painting.  However, I do pay attention to texture, direction, and overlapping patterns to create a clear resemblance to plumage.
