How I Capture These Historical Coastal Beacons: Painting Illuminating Lighthouses
The Essence of Light
When it comes to how light interacts with a lighthouse's structure I focus on capturing the radiant beam and subtle shadows.

Palette of the Coast
While I embrace the blues, grays, and ochres of the coastal landscape to create a realistic and evocative palette, I enjoy adding bright sun or moonlight to shift the colors to lighter and sometimes off color shades that I create on my pallette.

I use layering techniques to add depth to my lighthouse paintings. This is accomplished with an acrylic underpainting and completion in oils for highlights and depths through the use of transparent and opaque colors.
Atmospheric Perspective
I employ atmospheric perspective in my lighthouse paintings to create a sense of distance and depth in my coastal scenes. Some of my paintings may show a cloudy sky while others show a sunny bright sky. My favorite is a night sky lit by the moon and the beacon light of a lighthouse.
