Small and Fragile
The white mouse, often associated with innocence and purity symbolizes vulnerability and gentleness. Its small size and delicate features invite empathy and compassion, evoking feelings of tenderness and protection. This is why I painted this sweet depiction of the many tiny mice I've had and sadly lost.
I never forgot the tiny mice I purchased in my twenties to be my pets. I was alone in an apartment and couldn't have a cat or a dog, so I chose mice. I made studies of just the right environment for these little creatures, but after a few months each one died. I eventually learned that there was a gas leak in my apartment that I couldn't detect. The fumes were at a poisenous level for small animals, especially mice and birds. I felt so badly that I never owned another mouse again.
Recently I decided to paint the little white mouse at left titled, "Small and Fragile" to symbolize the 4 mice that I lost. Surrounded by a kaleidoscope of blooming flowers in shades of pink, white, and yellow, I wanted to represent their sweetness and the transience and vulnerability of small animals who depend upon our love and care. They're a gift of tiny companionship, so each bloom I painted represents the joy and happiness they gave me for a short time since flowers, too, have a fleeting existence.
Overall, this artwork leaves a lasting emotional impact on me, and I hope you as well with a sense of tenderness, beauty, and fragility. No matter how small a pet or anything special in our lives might be, they can still evoke deep feelings within us and bring out our better selves as we cherish and care for them. Because of my tiny friends I came to cherish life more fervently, realizing that life can be fragile at times so we need strength and resilience.
